It’s always a gamble, choosing a sequel movie and hoping it will not disappoint. Luckily you have me here to tell you that this one’s not a gamble, it’s a great choice.
The gang gets together and comes up with a plan to end the war against the ‘Sentinels’, before it even begins. Wolverine is sent back to the past (1973) to bring together young Magneto, Professor X and Mystique, all fighting their own internal battles and a little unstable in their youth. The movie goes quite deep into some of the key themes that we’ve known to love from X-Men stories: the fear of those who are different, battles between extremists who believe that their immorality is justified, the fear of change, losing hope and finding it again, the inner struggle with one’s own power and the potential of it, and a love triangle thrown in for extra measure.
It’s fun to delve into the lives of the younger Professor, Mystique and Magneto and how Wolverine adapts to the past version of his friends and mentors. There was also an extra-fun appearance from young Quicksilver, who they got to break into the Pentagon with his superhuman speed.
I was on the edge of my seat for most of it and it was just a beautiful and well-rounded movie. (Lots of action for the boy-folk too).
Watch it. Immediately. It’s AWESOME.
